Use Communication for a Smoother Divorce Process

Divorce is a difficult process, but one that can ultimately lead to a more positive future if handled correctly. One component that can help make the divorce process smoother is good communication between both parties. In general, communication entails how you relay your thoughts and what you say to the other person including body language and tone of voice but also how the other person receives and interprets what you say to them.

Even though good communication is important during your marriage, it is also very important during a divorce. Often when a couple decides to divorce there are other people involved including children, parents and other family members. It is especially important to have good communication if you have children to effectively co-parent when you are no longer together.

Often is it very sad what happens to entire families when going through a divorce if the husband and wife can’t find a way to effectively communicate to resolve their issues and come to a mutual agreement.

One thing that can help is mediation. You can attend mediation and try to work out your issues even before filing for divorce. Mediation is something that can be done on your own or you can hire an attorney to represent you just for mediation, a pre-litigation mediation. Before you file for divorce, if you think you and your spouse can come to an agreement, mediation can help to get some things settled beforehand. The more that is settled up front the less there is to disagree on or fight about later.

At a private mediation, both parties share the cost and you both can attend as long as is needed to work things out. The cost is much less than paying for a collaborative attorney. The process when using a collaborative attorney is a good one as well but it can be very expensive.

If you want to go to mediation before filing for divorce to try to get all of the issues worked out, you can choose to have the assistance of an attorney or not (we highly recommend choosing to have an attorney assist). You will make great strides in making the difficulty of divorce easier on everyone involved, including children and other family members.

Keep in mind it is very difficult for children and family to see their parents and those they love fighting over all the issues involved in getting a divorce. Communicating and working things out before you file for divorce will make life after the divorce that much easier because the process would have been smoother. Mediation is a great way to do that.
